Questions to ask before taking advise

 Very good and insightful article

The most critical thing is the experience of the advisor and the skin in the game.

The traditional consulting model of putting up the generalistst and fees upfront model doesn't fit this.

Plagiarism at Indian Schools

Today, when I was doing some browsing about the success factors for a successful M&A for Indian companies, JLR came to my mind. I first came across a research report by an Investment bank and then a project report by some IIT/IIM students. I was shocked that these project reports were copied word by word from the Investment bank report.
http://www.slideshare.net/purval/tata-motors-jlr-deal-part2
http://www.scribd.com/doc/9156583/Merger-and-Acquisition-Tata-Jlr-garg
These students would have been turned out of school if it would have been any global Business or Technology school. There is zero (and it is definitely 0) tolerance for plagiarism at any top school, but that is not the case at premium schools in India.

Well I never want to badmouth the so called premium institutes in India but then this does not mean that we become irrational. They are degrading in quality and reports about this degradation are surfacing in media. Just 2 days ago, Jairam Ramesh spoke something, which everyone knows – “Faculty and Research at IIM’s and IIT’s sucks”. There were reports of IIT’s thesis being copied and other. IIT Kanpur recently was in media for a copied thesis case. 2 days ago Sandeep Dikshit voiced the same about a reputed college.

Hope Kapil Sibal, Minister – HRD is listening and start doing something radical instead of fighting with Jairam Ramesh..........Ha Ha .......I am definitely away from any politics

What I learnt most from my MBA?

1. Structuring of my thought process - I was doing a lot of Stakeholder management in HPCL. But I was doing it based on my intuition. During my MBA, I learnt how to identify relevant stakeholders, prioritize them and map their actions based on incentives.

2. Holistic View - I used to see business as marketing and sales in Silos, but I learnt in my MBA that they are just a tiny cog in the whole business dynamics, which involves a lot of interactions between various business functions. For Example, Finance is an important consideration for designing marketing strategy to fix margins and potential investments

3. Global View - My international colleagues and my Exchange provided me an opportunity to gain view of the world as a whole. I was able to appreciate the impact of the financial crisis in Europe, by seeing their state welfare programs. On business front also, I was able to appreciate why Germans are so competitive that rest of Europe- It is the presence of the unions on the secondary board of companies.

Short USD Long Yen, Major Asian Currencies

Just an hour ago, US Dolloar (aka Treasury) is downgraded for the first time by US based agency - S&P. Though it has already been downgraded by the biggest investor in US economy - China. When this happened some 6 months ago, almost all my American Classmates at my Alternative investment class, in Kenan Flagler Business School, UNC were of the opinion that this is none-sense and nobody cares a damn about Chinese downgrade.

I argued a bit but then there were people, who believe that they have better knowledge of the financial world. This points out one of the biggest problems with US business Schools Graduates. They operate as just like Muslim Ghetto's and believes the world outside the ghetto is stupid. THANK GOD, I went to CEIBS to get broad outlook of world rather than narrow US based outlook of world.

Anyway, its time for some quick buck. I am sure many long-short macro funds would have milled millions by now.

Unemployed from last 2 years

Last 2 years have been wonderful journey. I went to CEIBS for my MBA with both sweet and bitter experience. This included a brief stint of 5 months to US at Kenan Flagler Business School, University of North Carolina.

From last 2 years, I have been away from the regular hectic life of being in a job and doing something which you do not enjoy sometimes. Last 2 years were bit unique in the sense that I was doing only what I really want to do. For Example - I did 3 internships during my MBA and 4th just after my MBA. This is sort of a record but I really liked working on these small projects. I believe that I have created strong impact in 2 of my internships.

This made me to realize that this unemployment of last 2 years have made me to realize something unique about me that I yearn for and enjoy creating impact. The next big challenge would be to maintain the same enthusiasm of creating impact in short span of time, when I join a new job.

I thank my luck for being unemployed for last 2 years.

Fixed Income Result surprised me

I was taken by surprise that I got an H in Fixed Income. Honestly, I did not studied that hard. In fact I did not studied at all for Fixed Income as my time was consumed in other subjects and activities. After finals, I was sure I will get good marks as I did all the problems correct with full confidence. But still, I was not expecting H as their are a number of people from Wall Street in my class, who had done a lot of Fixed Income and proprietary trading in their career.

Though for me it does not matter which grade I get, as I am on exchange, it is a nice surprise. At least, I do not want to be a Fixed Income securities trader on Wall Street. That to me, it is a mindless number crunching job. Though I am good at number crunching, but i want to do some meaningful job. Corporate finance seems to be most attractive field to me. It is very well connected to PE/VC sector, both of which entice me a lot.

CEIBS v/s ISB

Now this is going to draw a bigger flak especially from the students community......People will try to prove me ight or wrong at some of the points......but I just want to start a frank evaluation of the two schools.....

Student Profile:-
Profile of students at ISB is much younger and hence have less work experience. Most of the students(59% as per their brochure) at ISB are from the IT sector and 40% of those have less than 4 years experience. CEIBS has a bit balanced profile. Finance is most relevant at CIEBS having some 24% of students. Most of the studnt

Also, ISB has only 6% of non-Indians, while CIEBS has about 40% non-Chinese. Hence, student profile is more diverse at CEIBS.

Faculty:-
Though ISB boasts of having all the doctrate faculty as doctractes, faculty at CEIBS is very well connected with the Faculty and had better experience and profile than CEIBS. Both the school focus on the visiting faculty model.

Industry Interaction:-
ISB has better connection with the industry in terms of nos of people in the Governing Body. Also the profile of the people in the executive board and the Governing board is really class apart at ISB. The governing body and the industry interaction is no match at CEIBS in comparison to ISB. CEIBS really need to work hard on this front.

Clubs :-

Clubs at ISB though not as numerous at CIEBS are really involved in lot of activities. On the other hand Clubs at CEIBS cover literally every aspects of business life but are bit shallow in their activities.

Projects :-

This is one area where ISB cleary scores over CEIBS in terms of both the nos and quality of projects. Projects are further strengthened by centres such as the Wadhwani centre. This is the reason why more no of students at ISB goes for their own venture. CEIBS is yet to come out with some highly involved project activities leading to entreprenuership ventures of students.

Placements :-

CEIBS is the clear winner in this arena. Just compare the nos of jobs per student is the Highest at CEIBS (close to 5 jobs per students. Salary package at CEIBS are the same as that of ISB. Also, the profile of the firms visiting CEIBS is more diverse and strong.

At the same time ISB had some good connections with the firms such as Mkinsey, through their god father such as Rajat Gupta. CEIBS does not have any such God fathers. But they still manage to have placements far better than any other B-School on earth. Much of this had to do with the numero uno position of CEIBS in china, while ISB has to struggle with IIMS and other local indian B-Schools.

Curriculum :-
CIEBS has more industry oriented curriculum, while the curriculum of ISB is very sanwiched due to short duration of the program.

Non MBA Programs:-

ISB focuses much on short term programs such as the 3 days, 1 month sort of. CEIBS is more focused on executive education. But still the level of contact is much more at ISB than CEIBS.

Conclusion :-

ISB has much younger profile and more focussed on General Management. CEIBS has bit mature student profile and focuses a bit more on specialisations.

Now I want a frank evaluation of the schools from the points discussed above......

Baggage Limits

Airlines esp.........the international ones are smart enough.......

China Eastern charges Rs. 920 per extra Kg of baggage....and all the international flights have limits of 20 Kg for baggage and 8 Kg for cabin ...

Thats a fair method of earning extra bucks by the airlines.

Education Loan

Well I tried out both the ICICI and the SBI option today. Delhi University branch of SBI opens at around 10AM. So, I went to the ICICI bank instead. They directed me to the Kamla Nagar branch. Well the branch was just 50m from the place, where my vehicle was booked for "Parkign in No Parking Area". This time I was more cautious and parked the car in proper place.

ICICI - The smiling lady told me that they dont provide study loan and they are only interested in personal loans and that too they can fetch me only 3-4 lacs only. I had tongue in my cheeks. They are totally haywire and are playing the ball with all the controls in hand....ie I should have proof of income, which can give help me repaying the same in 12 months.
Good Business Strategy - not loosening up their purse strings in a tight Credit Crunch and interest rate of 18% with sound proof customers insure a sound bet.

SBI
Reached back at 10 minutes to 10 AM. I was having some thoughts that even SBI have got professional. See the Facia of insurance advertisement and the new token machine. The gaurd was cooperative to tell me to contact the person with out token. Later on I was told the Mrs. Rekha is absent.

There was some add placed in the bank main hall ........some loan advertisement .......Contact Mrs Rekha...

Albiet, I got the picture from a nice gentlemen sitting out there .........

1. loan for only 70% of the Collateral
2. Interest 12-13.5 %.

God! the interest thing really struck me up - see the difference between 12 and 18 - A good 50% percent difference. That ICICI fellow must be really earning good bucks.

well that Official in the bank asked me that - "Isnt your MBA costly enough" - Well I told him "Perhaps you are not aware abt the Wharton, Kellogs & Havards - they are 2-3 times costlier than this....and I am going to CEIBS - a college equally placed in that league and may be ahead of these in a couple of years."

I gave a very confident answer to that officer... but atleast it made me to think that is it really worth ..........

I mean " 22.5 lacs for 18 months "

What I am going to gain in 18 months that will pitch me ahead with ....

18months+30lacs <<<< Gains out of 18 months for the full life.....

Fees I will pay back in 2 years.......

Study loan

Its really difficult to get a loan thes days. due to lot of NPA's in banks
Non performing assest have become biggest liabilities of banks and they are refusign any fresh loan application. otherwise they are putting the app on hold for furhter apprval from higher authorities

A lot students have defaulted on their laons this year
i talked to one fellow that they had laoned some students in Australia 2 years back
and they are now not in a condition to repay back the loan after 6 months of graduation as they are without jobs in australia and hence, the authority for apprval of loan has moved to zonal office than the branch or regional office
still i m goin to Delhi University branch of SBI and ICICI today. i hope they will be more positive as they know the situation more pragmatically

Submitted fees for CEIBS

Well after 3 long years, I am finally going to a B School. This is really an emotional moment for me. The most surpurising thing is the school to which I am going.

Its CEIBS - China Europe International Business School.

I had just wired 5000 USD as my admit confirmation and my heart is pounding. I am finally going there.

A lot of things went in between and that too very fast. Albeit after getting the CEIBS admit, life really seemed to be settled but alas it was just a moment of euphorbia as within the next second I realised that there are a ton of assignments to be completed before finally moving to Pudong ( East Shanghai where the school is located).

Most important among them includes

1. Arranging for funds....some how my wife is convinced that we wont be making our life hell by commiting to a bank loan.......

Options : parents, friends and well wishers.

2. Putting in my papers at HPCL - well there are a couple of issues for which I never bothered at HPCL, but now I am straight to it and want to collect out and juice out the last penny and knowledge from HPCL.

3. Going for a vacation :- Yes this also very important on my list of to dos..We havent gone for a long vacation for a long time. It has been more than one year down the line since we went to Singapore and Malaysia......Hence, I am planning for a good leisure trip

4. Fmaily :- Things are really not in good shape. Recesssion and couple of bad investments forced us to suffer heavy loss esp the Transportation business...
Really need to settle some of the thing including funds in the family.......at least that will gimme a piece of mind during my MBA

5. Chinese / CFP / Blah Blah :- God I m really scared, where i will find the time to pay attention to these otherwise important things......I mean i could give them only the 5th priority to my list....

In addition to this there are hordes of other things to do such as networking with people for internship and other resources in PRC. I wish I had more time with me before I am onboard to Shangai

I was amazed to see this analysis of English words. Well thats why this language is too tough to master.
